How do capital assets that have been depreciated transfer over to the estate after the taxpayer dies? Is it just value at DOD and no consideration for total amount depreciated over the life of the taxpayer?

Pay it forward. Three simple words but when joined together becomes powerful enough to affect change. The philosophy behind this phrase states that when someone does something good for you, you have to do something good for someone else in return. To simply describe the concept, it is like the kid’s game called “Tag”. If you know the rules of this game, then you already have a basic understanding of how “pay it forward” works. Tag is a simple game that requires the “it” player to chase another player. The game can continue indefinitely that’s why others have modified the rules of the game over the years. Hence, pay it forward is like playing a modified ...

Dubai: The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) 2013-2014 report found that teaching in general and the Arabic language subject were areas of concern that needed to be improved in Dubai private schools. Teaching was one of the areas of concern as over 40 per cent of teaching was no better than acceptable across all schools. The report found that teaching improved most in kindergarten and in primary phases, however there was limited improvement in other phases. The high number of teachers leaving and joining schools each year also had a negative impact on the quality of teaching. According to a previous report, inspectors ...

Scholastic writing is presumably a standout amongst the most testing undertakings you confront at school. Expositions, examination papers, theses – there are simply an excess of them. When you learn nuts and bolts of writing a respectable paper, a research project assignment arrives. You manage this one, when – blast! – Now is the right time to begin chipping away at your theory. It may go on until the end of time! Keeping in mind standard assignments are truly reasonable as far as their structure and style, others (non-standard or inventive, that is) simply bewilder you. How the blazes would you say you should know how to keep in touch with it?! An assignment ...

Properly handling sales tax and use tax issues and compliance in Colorado can be extremely complicated. Colorado has nearly 70 self-administered home-rule cities and combined city/counties. Their definitions and interpretations of nexus, taxability and the underlying tax code and can and often do vary from the State and from each other. Licensing and registrations are often required for multiple jurisdictions. Home-rule cities have their own auditors or use contract auditors. Denver, for example, has around 40 auditors on staff! Contractors, medical related companies, manufacturers, software companies, information service providers, service business, ...

As idealists we wish to live in a utopian corporate world that is free from vices like accounting frauds and ‘white collar’ crimes. However, ever so often, we come across cases of fraud in the corporate world, across all geographies. On its surface, it might appear that entities from developed countries are faring better than emerging economies and the under-developed world in matters of preventing corporate accounting fraud. However, the reality might be shrouded by the sophistication in how frauds are committed in the modern times; cybercrimes and computer fraud proliferate which threaten our economic well-being, our private lives, and the system that ...

“You might one day need to be a whistle-blower. Be forewarned: Your personal and professional lives will suffer”, shares Patricia Patrick, PHD, CFE, CPA, CGFM in her article with www.fraud-magazine.com , "Be Prepared Before You Blow the Whistle". True enough, once you blow the whistle, whether you wanted to be anonymous or not, your life is significantly affected. Not only yours, but that of your family and friends as well. Despite the risk, this should not stop one from doing the right thing, if it is the right thing indeed. In recent times, whistle-blowing highlights its importance as a useful means in unearthing malpractices and putting perpetrators ...

The Miami Heat has overcome a 5-point deficit with 28 seconds remaining in the penultimate game 6 last Tuesday to force a sudden death final game. Last Thursday, they have found their rhythm to defeat the mighty veterans of the San Antonio Spurs. Great things come to those who work hard toward attaining their goals. After almost four months, today marks the dawning of a new beginning insofar as my professional career as an accountant is concerned. I have received this morning a notification from NASBA confirming, finally, that my application for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Colorado has passed quality review. ...

Do you know what Richard Branson’s greatest motivation is? It is “ to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long university education that I never had—each day I am learning something new “. Most people like to say that they’d like to do and experience everything that they can while they’re still young, insinuating that after a certain age it might be too late. This young generation of technocrats believes that people stop being motivated and creative as they reach middle age. On the brighter side, this way of thinking can fuel your desire and determination to see and do everything possible while you still have the energy ...

Accounting is dynamic. To be able to go with the waves, CPAs should be dynamic, too. Mady, a fresh graduate from college, went to the beach to relax and pamper herself in an exotic resort in the Philippines. She deserves it. After all, she just hurdled past the tough Philippine CPA board examinations last May. She sat down in one of the chairs stationed at the coast line. After a while, she noticed two men pulling a kayak down the water against the dancing waves with paddles firmly gripped on their sides. “Wow! I’d like to go kayaking, too,” she told herself. She keenly observed how the two men did kayaking. After twenty minutes ...

Some of you must have received your scores by now. It is in these times of the month when pressing F5 is the name of the game. Congratulations to those who have been successful in earning their perfect scores (75!), and the not-so-perfect-but-equally-acceptable 80s and 90s. For my sister who didn’t quite make it, this one’s for her and for everyone else who didn’t receive a passing mark this time . There are times when we believe we already have a good plan in place to achieve our aspirations in life. For the sake of hitting the mark, we prepare ourselves physically and emotionally, willing to do everything humanly possible, and apply every ...

Studying for the CPA examinations is kind of addictive. You may find yourself crawling in the first two weeks in to exam preparation, but as soon as you get your groove going you soon feel something’s lacking each time you do not open your FAR book in a rest day, or knock off a few Wiley exercises on AUD, or listen to your Ninja Audio on REG. It’s been almost a month since I learned I passed REG, the final leg of my CPA journey. I want to share with you how more meaningful life has become after winning it back. A week after passing REG I had gone for a short stop to Manila to celebrate my victory with my mom, siblings, friends, and employees of ...

Pardon the Disruption …

Business school MBA programs throughout the country teach the notion of innovation through disruption in an effort to spark business leaders and would be entrepreneurs enrolled in their program. While such programs endeavor to nudge entrepreneurs out of the nest with success stories about Silicon Valley innovators (that famous guy from Apple © comes to mind), the speed of innovation and disruption today is like a spring tornado blowing through the Midwest leaving a wake of realization that ideas of would be innovators may have already been disrupted. What is disruptive innovation? When I started my Executive MBA at the University of Denver in the spring ...

In their book, Blue Ocean Strategy , Kim and Mauborgne contrast the highly contested, rules driven market space they label as red oceans with the untapped, demand creating market space they label as blue oceans. Red oceans are characterized by a fixed market potential with each participant grasping to eke out small percentage gains in market share hoping to marginally improve profits. The products and services indicative of red oceans are commoditized and companies compete with each other by trying to beat out the competition. Blue oceans are characterized as a space for creating demand which in turn creates opportunities for high growth in profits contrasted ...
